Top Ten Films 2005

Note: as this list is based on films I have watched this year, some may be older than 2005.

1.  The Aviator

Leonardo Dicaprio gives a startling performance of a troubled

genius, and director Martin Scorsese delivers his most lavish work

         to date.

2.    Switchblade Romance

From the gentle start to the heart-stopping climax, this fierce slasher

film grabs you by the throat.  Stunning camera work and near-

unbearable tension.  A film that re-invents the 80s video nasty.

3.    Collateral

Tom Cruise plays the villain.  Jamie Fox becomes a star to watch, and

Director Michael Mann finally delivers the film to be mentioned in the

same sentence as Heat without the least embarrassment.

4.    The Incredibles

The Pixar powerhouse continues once again, this time re-inventing

the super hero movie in an animated film with more ideas and

personality than a dozen Spiderman or Batman flicks.

5.    Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

George Lucas finally unveils the film he has been trying to make for

the last 30 years.  Startling visuals that this time combine with a

powerful, emotional story full of cheer-at-the-screen great moments.

6.    Zatoichi

Cult director ‘Beat’ Takeshi brings us one of the most realistic and

beautifully made Samurai flicks you’re ever likely to see.

7.    Mr & Mrs. Smith

Marital strife mixes with high-octane spy action in Doug Lieman’s funny

and stylish thriller.  Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt make for one of the

sexiest on-screen couples for some time.

8.    Old Boy

Far Eastern revenge thriller with a striking lead performance and one of

the nastiest twists in cinema history.  Unforgettable.

9.    Sin City

Comic-book violence meet film noir in Robert Rodriguez’s startling

graphic-novel brought to life, based on Frank Miller’s acclaimed series

          of books.

10.  Batman Begins

With a franchise that was dead after the critical mauling of Batman &

Robin, director Christopher Nolan returns Batman to his former glory

with a perfect Christian Bale and a heavy-weight cast that shines.
